1. Students sub-category

Eligibility

  • An individual student or group of students.
  • Citizen of Malawi .
  • Enrolled in a university or college school in Malawi.

Application requirements

  • Call for applications issued by MACRA.
  • Use of specified forms.
  • Written Endorsement by academic supevisor.

Application Criteria

  • Relevance to the key thematic area.
  • Clear strategy and methodology in implementing the research.
  • Quality of the research with respect to solving key challenges in Malawi using ICTs.
  • Impact of the research on the socio-economic development of the country.
  • Ability to access or provide a plan for attracting sufficient resources for completion beyond the funding provided by MACRA.

Terms of funding

  • Funds shall cover only the applicant's direct costs associated with the research activities needed to address the identified problem or innovation.

Academia

2.Collborative sub-category

Eligibility

  • A team of student and lecturers.
  • From one or more universities/colleges in Malawi.
  • Applications of interdisciplinary collaboration are strongly encouraged.
  • The principal researcher must, be an academic staff with a continuing appointment in a university/college in Malawi.

Application requirements

  • Call for applications issued by MACRA.
  • Use of specified form.
  • The application form submitted in response to the call must be co-signed by the principal researcher and another researcher in the team.
  • The endorsement shall be sought from all participating universities/colleges where the researchers have been drawn.
  • The endorsement by the Registrar shall outline the following:
    • Recommendations for the application.
    • The applicant's employment status within the university/college, and
    • The applicant access to such resources, equipment, facilities, etc. as may be required to undertake the proposed research.

Application Criteria

  • Relevance to the key thematic areas.
  • Clear strategy and methodology in implementing the research and/or innovations.
  • Quality of the research with respect to solving a key societal challenge in Malawi using ICTs;
  • Impact of the research on the socio-economic development of the country;
  • Ability to access or provide a plan for attracting sufficient resources for completion beyond the funding provided by MACRA.
  • Composition of research team members in terms of universities/ colleges and academic discipline

Terms of funding

  • Eligible costs will be those directly incurred on project activities necessary for the research at hand.
  • The fund will not cover salaries or salary supplementation and course fees.

3. SECTOR/INDUSTRY RESEARCH

Eligibility

  • Individual researchers.
  • Research institutions and innovators in the country.
  • The awardees shall be expected to undertake research specifically in the thematic areas stated.

Application requirements

  • Call for applications issued by MACRA.
  • Use specified format.
  • The application form submitted must be signed by the researcher(s).
  • Endorsement by at least two referees should include the following:
    • Recommendations for the application.
    • Duly signed and preferably official stamp.

Application Criteria

  • Relevance to the key thematic areas.
  • Clear strategy and methodology in implementing the research and/or innovations.
  • Quality of the research with respect to solving a key societal challenge in Malawi using ICTs;
  • Impact of the research on the socio-economic development of the country.
  • Ability to access or provide a plan for attracting sufficient resources for completion beyond the funding provided by MACRA.

4. MACRA Special Projects

Eligibility

  • Open to both the academia and research institutions.
  • Researchers shall be awarded grants to undertake research area of specific interest to the Authority and/or Government that shall result in growth of the ICT sector and the economy.

Application requirements

  • Responsiveness of the proposal to the MACRA problem statement how well the project meets the program objectives and demonstration of the delivery to produce high quality outputs;
  • How coherent the work plan proposed is and demonstrates a high probability of successfully achieving the objectives of the research in the proposed time frame;
  • Quality of the research team to deliver the proposed research outputs;
  • The appropriateness of the overall budget considering the research activity.

  • Clear strategy and methodology in implementing the research and/or innovations.
  • Quality of the research with respect to solving a key societal challenge in Malawi using ICTs;
  • Impact of the research on the socio-economic development of the country.
  • Ability to access or provide a plan for attracting sufficient resources for completion beyond the funding provided by MACRA.

Terms of funding

  • However supplementary non-financial facilitation such as in-kind contributions for other requirements associated with the research project shall be considered.
  • The funding under this category shall cover only research expenses that are directly associated with the research project. Fees, salaries and other such remuneration will not be eligible for consideration.

4. General Public

Eligibility

  • Open to all Malawians that do not fall under the other three categories
  • General public that are not in industry or universities but have potential for research innovation execution.
  • Open to Primary and secondary students.

Application requirements

  • Use of the specified form
  • Written endorsement by recognized authority(e.g. TA, DC, Headmaster, etc.).
  • The endorsement should include the following:
    • Recommendations for the application.
    • Duly signed and preferably official stamp from a recognised Authority

Application Criteria

  • Relevance to the key thematic areas.
  • Clear strategy and methodology in implementing the research and/or innovations.
  • Quality of the research with respect to solving a key societal challenge in Malawi using ICTs;
  • Impact of the research on the socio-economic development of the country.
  • Ability to access or provide a plan for attracting sufficient resources for completion beyond the funding provided by MACRA.

Terms of funding

  • The funding shall cover only expenses directly associated with the innovation project.
  • Fees, salaries and other such remuneration will not be eligible for consideration.
